What really are tandoors?

A tandoor is basically a cylinder like cooking equipment that is made up of clay or masonry. It has a heat source inside and also has thick and insulated walls covering it. When the food is to be made, the particular food item is placed in the tandoor through a hole that is on the top of this equipment. The hole that is at the top of the tandoor also works as the chimney through which the smoke passes out. 

The food that is prepared in the tandoor is basically a type of Iranian, Indian as well as Pakistani foods. Various bread items such as rotis, naans, tandoori etc. are also prepared with the use of tandoor. Chicken tikka masala is one of the food items that are very much prepared for it. Tiny pieces of chicken are firstly marinated in yogurt and spices and then are barbecued in the tandoor. Tikka food items are inserted on skewers and they are put inside it for the final preparation. 


How should you use a Tandoor:

For using a tandoor, first of all, it needs to be heated.  The heating is usually done on an open flame or coals. But, nowadays, many people also are using gas flame inside the tandoor. Once it is heated, the food item is baked by sticking it to the walls of the tandoor. The dough of the bread items are made stuck in its walls and with the help of the heat, the particular bread items are finally prepared.

On the other hand, for any tikka related food items, firstly, small pieces of chicken or paneer are skewed on the skewer and then it is put inside the tandoor. The heat of the tandoor is much higher as compared to a regular oven as the walls are very thick and the heat is much higher. Besides, tandoori foods have a smoky flavor which is created because of the clay oven from which the tandoor is made. When the food is being made, the juice of the food falls on the ashes that create a smoke flavored smell.

Therefore, with the use of the above-mentioned ways you can use a tandoor for cooking amazing and delicious tandoori food items at your home. But, you should keep in mind to use it if you have full knowledge about using it in the correct way. Cooking with the use of a tandoor requires a different set of skills as it can be risky if you don’t know the right way of using it. The procedure of cooking food in the tandoor is totally different from the western style baking and roasting and you should be careful enough while using it.
